The bright reflection of moonlight across a body of water. A film directed by Coral Dolphin. Created remotely over the last few months with Coral in the US, myself in the UK and the Atlantic Ocean between us. Ourselves reflecting off one another throughout the process since both the visual and the music was developed stage by stage. Her vision inspired how I approached aspects of the music which in turn informed the concepts for the film. Coral drew inspiration from the words of Marcus Garvey; ‘We are going to emancipate ourselves from the mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind’. Coral believes Marcus Garvey felt there was a deeper freedom that we all possess and the first change towards that freedom takes place in the mind. She feels the deconstruction and rewiring of our minds go deeper than flesh however. She explores themes of corruption, the collective and consciousness and wanted the dancers to represent the dehumanisation, suffrage, pain and un-healing caused by the effects of systematic indoctrination on an extreme level. Her influence is everlasting – revered by her peers, and built upon by today’s fans and fresh faces. i-D, MAC Cosmetics and The Haughton Family present A-Z of Aaliyah, a modern homage to her music, dance, beauty and style. Director Cara Stricker reimagines the A-Z’s alphabet format as Aaliyah would – not bound by the confines of conventional language, but through a deconstructed narrative of Aaliyah’s persona, artistry and legacy. This nonlinear structure is illustrated through multiple formats including archival footage, otherworldly studio scenes, and airy exteriors in Aaliyah’s home of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. From Missy Elliott and Timbaland to Princess Nokia, Empress Of, Keke Palmer and Alton Mason, the film’s 26 vignettes weave together a cast of fans, collaborators, and creative talent building on Aaliyah’s influence today. Timbaland’s team scored the film with a modern interpretation of Aaliyah’s sound. Aaliyah collaborators Tre Major, Eric Ferrell and Derek Lee consulted on hair, makeup and styling, respectively. And finally, five of Aaliyah’s biggest fans were cast through Instagram, building on the inherently social movement that sparked MAC’s upcoming Aaliyah Collection.
